“Higher Vision
Higher Vision was originally created as a monument for Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The first sculpture in this limited edition was installed outside the university library, where its purpose was to inspire students to look beyond the challenges of the present and pursue their loftiest goals.
The Red-tailed Hawk was chosen as the subject because it embodies the qualities of vision, focus, determination, and perspective. From great heights, a hawk can detect remarkably small prey from miles away. Its visual acuity is estimated to be several times sharper than that of a human, allowing it to perceive fine details at distances where we would need to be much closer. With a wide field of view and two areas of concentrated focus, each eye is capable of precisely tracking movement. Hawks can also perceive ultraviolet wavelengths, giving them the ability to detect subtle trails left by rodents on the ground.
These extraordinary abilities make the hawk a powerful symbol of human potential. From above, it sees what cannot be seen from the ground. It reminds us to rise above distractions, keep our vision fixed on what matters, and recognize opportunities that may be hidden from a limited perspective.
Higher Vision is ultimately a reminder that we each possess unique talents and gifts. When we develop those abilities, maintain our focus, and rise above the obstacles before us, we can see possibilities that once seemed beyond our reach—and live more fully up to our potential.”
